Alpha-gal syndrome monitoring window (weeks-months delayed)

Alpha-gal symptoms appear 3-6 hours after eating mammal meat and can develop weeks to months after a lone star tick bite.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
After a lone star bite, watch for delayed allergic reactions to red meat (beef, pork, lamb) for at least 6 months.
  2. 02
Symptoms appear 3-6 hours after eating — hives, swelling, GI distress, or anaphylaxis — not immediately like a typical food allergy.
  3. 03
Dairy and gelatin can also trigger reactions in some patients.
  4. 04
Keep a food-and-symptom diary if you feel anything off after meat-containing meals.
  5. 05
Suspected reactions warrant an allergist visit and an alpha-gal IgE blood test.
  6. 06
While testing is pending, avoid red meat and carry an epinephrine auto-injector if reactions have been severe.
