Burning the tick disinfects the bite

Heat does not sterilize the bite site and the burning approach actively raises the chance of pathogen transmission.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
DO NOT think of burning the tick as a way to cauterize or disinfect the bite.
  2. 02
The heat needed to actually sterilize the wound would cause a serious burn, and the small flame applied to a tick does no such thing.
  3. 03
Worse, the heat irritates the still-attached tick and can cause it to regurgitate pathogen-laden contents into the wound.
  4. 04
Remove the tick mechanically with fine-tipped tweezers, then disinfect the bite area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.
  5. 05
That is the standard, effective sequence: pull, then clean.
