Detached but still moving tick — capture for ID

A tick crawling on skin or clothing isn't attached yet; capture it with tape and bag it for identification, don't smash it.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
Press a strip of clear packing tape directly onto the tick — it will stick instantly.
  2. 02
Fold the tape over so the tick is sealed between two sticky surfaces.
  3. 03
Place the taped tick onto a white index card and write the date, location of find, and host (skin or clothing).
  4. 04
Inspect the host immediately for an attached tick at any nearby site — they often arrive in pairs or clusters.
  5. 05
Save the card in a zip bag for ID; tape-mounted ticks remain identifiable for months.
