Doxycycline + pregnancy: when to escalate to clinician

Pregnant patients with a tick bite should not self-prescribe; escalate any bite or symptom directly to an obstetric clinician.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
Do not start doxycycline prophylaxis on your own during pregnancy.
  2. 02
Call your OB or maternal-fetal medicine clinician within 24 hours of any concerning tick bite.
  3. 03
Bring the tick, the bite location, the date, and the engorgement estimate.
  4. 04
For confirmed early Lyme, amoxicillin or cefuroxime is the standard alternative during pregnancy.
  5. 05
Untreated Lyme is the bigger risk; do not delay evaluation out of fear of antibiotics.
