Multiple disseminated EM lesions — what they mean

Multiple EM patches appearing days to weeks after a bite indicate early disseminated Lyme and need a longer 14-21 day oral course.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
Multiple expanding red patches in different body locations indicate spirochetes have entered the bloodstream.
  2. 02
This is early disseminated Lyme, not a primary EM at the bite site.
  3. 03
Treatment is still oral doxycycline (or amoxicillin/cefuroxime), but for the longer end of the range — typically 14-21 days.
  4. 04
Look for accompanying systemic symptoms: fever, headache, neck stiffness, fatigue, joint pain.
  5. 05
Any new neurologic or cardiac symptoms should bump care up to in-person evaluation that day.
