Oil drowns the tick by suffocating it

Ticks breathe only a few times per hour; oil does not suffocate them quickly enough to be useful, but does delay proper removal.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
DO NOT use cooking oil, mineral oil, baby oil, or any oil to drown a tick that is biting you.
  2. 02
Ticks have spiracles that open only briefly to exchange gas; they can survive sealed in oil for hours.
  3. 03
By the time the tick succumbs, it has had additional time to feed and has been stressed into possibly regurgitating into the wound.
  4. 04
Pull the tick mechanically with fine-tipped tweezers as soon as you find it; speed matters more than gentleness.
  5. 05
Clean the bite area with soap and water afterward.
