Photographing the tick before disposal (scale reference)

A sharp, well-lit photo with a coin or ruler in frame is enough for many entomologists to ID species and life stage.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
Place the tick on a plain white surface — a folded paper towel works.
  2. 02
Set a coin (US dime or quarter) or a small ruler beside it for scale.
  3. 03
Use your phone's macro mode or a clip-on macro lens; tap the screen to focus on the tick's back.
  4. 04
Take one shot from directly above and one at a 45-degree angle to capture mouthparts.
  5. 05
Save the photos with the date and bite location in the filename.
  6. 06
Then proceed to disposal or storage for testing.
