Removing a tick from a cat (cat-safe tools, no permethrin)

Cats are highly sensitive to permethrin and many essential oils; use mechanical removal only and never apply dog tick products to a cat.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
Wrap the cat in a towel (a 'purrito') so only the bite area is exposed.
  2. 02
Never apply permethrin, tea tree, or other dog-only spot-ons — they can be fatal to cats.
  3. 03
Use fine-tipped tweezers or a small tick hook designed for pets.
  4. 04
Grasp the tick at skin level and lift straight up with steady pressure, or rotate the hook 2-3 turns.
  5. 05
Drop the tick into alcohol, clean the bite with sterile saline, and watch for lethargy or fever for 14 days.
