Removing a tick from a dog (paws, ears, between toes)

Dogs hide ticks in skin folds, ear flaps, and between toes; part the fur, grip at skin level with tweezers or a tick hook, and lift straight up.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
Have a second person hold the dog and offer a high-value treat as distraction.
  2. 02
Part the fur around the tick so the bite site is fully visible.
  3. 03
Use fine-tip tweezers or a plastic tick hook; grasp at skin level, not on the body.
  4. 04
Pull straight up (tweezers) or rotate 2-3 times (hook) until the tick releases.
  5. 05
Drop the tick into rubbing alcohol in a labeled container — note date and which dog.
  6. 06
Clean the bite with chlorhexidine or soap and water; check the dog all over for additional ticks.
