Removing a tick from an eyelid

Eyelid ticks are best handled by a clinician with slit-lamp magnification; if you must remove one yourself, work very slowly with the eye closed.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
If you can reach a clinician, do — slit-lamp magnification makes this safer than home removal.
  2. 02
If self-removal is necessary, have the person close the eye and look down.
  3. 03
Use blunt-tipped iris forceps or fine pointed tweezers, with your free hand stabilizing the lid.
  4. 04
Grasp the tick at skin level on the lid margin and pull straight up with steady, slow pressure.
  5. 05
Rinse the eye with sterile saline and follow up with ophthalmology if any mouthparts remain or vision changes.
