Removing a tick from an infant

On infants, two adults and good light beat speed; one immobilizes, one removes with the smallest fine-tip tweezers you have.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
Lay the infant on a changing pad and have one adult gently immobilize the limbs and head.
  2. 02
Use needle-point tweezers (the same kind used for splinters), not adult cosmetic tweezers.
  3. 03
Grasp the tick at skin level and lift straight up with very slow, steady pressure.
  4. 04
Avoid alcohol on infant skin if irritation is a concern; soap and water is enough.
  5. 05
Photograph the bite, log the date, and call the pediatrician if the infant is under 8 weeks or the tick was attached more than 24 hours.
