Wild fact

Babesiosis Co Infection with Lyme

Because Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi share the same vector and the same reservoir mice, a single Ixodes scapularis bite can deliver both. Co-infected patients tend to have more severe and prolonged symptoms than those with Lyme alone, and standard doxycycline does not treat the Babesia parasite - which requires atovaquone plus azithromycin.
