Babesiosis Malaria of the Northeast

Babesiosis is sometimes called the malaria of the northeast: like Plasmodium, Babesia parasites invade red blood cells and rupture them, causing fever, hemolytic anemia, and dark urine. Severity scales with spleen function - asplenic and elderly patients can develop life-threatening parasitemia.
