Prevention (personal): protective clothing and the pant-tuck

Long sleeves, long pants, and tucking cuffs into socks force questing ticks onto visible fabric instead of skin — the highest-leverage free precaution.

Steps

schema.org/HowTo
  1. 01
Clothing is your physical barrier. The goal is to give a tick a long crawl across visible fabric before it reaches skin.
  2. 02
Wear long sleeves and long pants in tick habitat.
  3. 03
Tuck your shirt into your pants, and your pants into your socks or boots. Ticks quest from low vegetation and climb upward; the tuck forces them onto your outer pant leg, where you can spot them.
  4. 04
Choose light-coloured fabric so dark ticks are easier to see (this helps you find them, more than it deters them).
  5. 05
    Wear closed-toe shoes, not sandals.
  6. 06
Combine with permethrin-treated clothing for compounding effect.
  7. 07
This costs nothing and works everywhere. It is the highest-leverage tick precaution after repellent.
